The upcoming live-action adaptation of Snow White, starring Rachel Zegler, is Disney’s latest entry in a long line that started in 2010 with Tim Burton’s unexpectedly successful Alice in Wonderland. Time has not been kind to these movies, and they started to fall from audiences’ graces even before the pandemic hit. Yet, there’s reason to hope, as live-action reimaginings like Cruella and Cinderella prove the formula can work. If Disney is to keep churning out these live-action versions of its best-known classics, then it needs to choose characters and stories that actually have room for improvement. The Black Cauldron and The Sword in the Stone are prime candidates for this treatment, and god knows why they haven’t been tackled yet. Disney must change its approach to these projects if it wants them to be successful: no more princesses for the time being; instead, focus on lesser-known characters from not-so-beloved movies who can actually benefit from a reinterpretation. What do you think of Disney’s live-action movies? Do you like them? If so, what’s your favorite?
